Operation CommUNITY Nutrition
Community Buy Back Schemes
Moontree Organics is working in partnership with Siyazisiza and Community Farmer Network working towards sustainable projects whereby communities grow the ingredients in South Africa for our Moontree products, thereby aiding in upliftment of these communities
Siyazisiza Trust is a non-profit rural development organisation that works with smallholder community farmers and agricultural enterprises to improve their livelihoods, food security and environment.
All of Siyazisiza’s beneficiaries are Black South Africans, with 83% being woman and 15% youth. The Siyazisiza Trust is a Level 1 QSE B-BBEE Contributor, and a Public Benefit Organisation in terms of Section 30 of the Income Tax Act. All receipts and accruals are exempt from Income Tax in terms of Section 10 (cN).
Moontree, together with our great friend Andre Rutishauser
(from the Conscious Cafe) and Moringa 5000, started Operation CommUnity Nutrition project on the 12th May, 2020, during a time of great need. We have since setup up our NPO called imiFino
We prepare around 500 meals per week, supplying meals to those in need including Vumelani Orphan Care Centre in Shongweni.
We prepare highly nutritious, plant-based meals to be taken into the surrounding rural communities. These vegetable and legume (protein) rich meals are cooked in huge potjie pots over a slow fire in the traditional Zulu manner. We add in our locally grown, wild Superfoods and Moringa 5000, creating next level nutrition and boosting the immune system during this pandemic!
We are based at the Hole in the Wall Pizzeria, Assagay (Open Tues-Sunday 10am-6pm), where we prepare and cook the meals Tuesdays & Thursdays. For this Pilot project, we have tactically partnered up an NPO called Zero2Five who identify creches and orphanages in the area who are in need and deliver for us. Find us on Facebook.
community food gardens
Imifino NPO has also begun with sustainable Community Food Garden setup at various care centers. The ultimate goal is to empower those in need to be able to grow, harvest and prepare highly nutritious food for children and the elderly. At the same time, teaching people about Nutrition, wild harvesting, food preservation and how food can actually heal and keep one healthy…all encompassing of Hippocrates oath: Let food be thy Medicine and Medicine thy Food.
This project could not have been possible without the local community donating and supporting this initiative from cash, vegetables, fruit, blankets and masks – we thank you!
